AIoT Edge Gateway Selection Guide: Six Scenarios, Six Best Fits

Don’t start with the spec sheet. Start with the scenario. The right gateway is the best fit—not the highest spec or the most expensive one. Here are six common scenarios and matching ARMxy solutions.

1.PV Energy Storage EMS
Needs: 6–8 RS485 ports for BMS, PCS, meters, AC, and fire protection; lightweight AI for thermal runaway warning and PV forecasting; local closed-loop control when offline; wide temperature; cost-sensitive.
Recommended: BL370 + X20 + Y63.
Why: RK3562J, 1 TOPS NPU, 8 RS485, -40–85°C, DIN35 mounting, cost-effective. 12 RS485 or 6 TOPS would be overkill.
2.Substation Communication Management Unit Replacement
Needs: 10–12 RS485 ports; protocol conversion from Modbus/IEC 104/DL/T645 to IEC 61850; partial discharge AI; EMC Class III; engineering-semantic data upload.
Recommended: BL440 + X20 + 2×Y63.
Why: RK3576J, dual Y63 expansion, 12 RS485, 6 TOPS NPU, open Linux for power protocol stacks. BL370 supports only 8 RS485 and 1 TOPS is too limited here.
3.Industrial Visual Quality Inspection
Needs: 4 industrial cameras; YOLOv8 at 25+ FPS; 4 RS485 for PLCs and sensors; millisecond-level HMI display; replace “industrial PC + vision box + gateway.”
Recommended: BL450 + X20 + 2×Y63.
Why: RK3588J, 6 TOPS NPU, 8K encode/decode, 12 RS485, 4–6 concurrent video streams, trigger-to-reject within 50 ms. BL440 has weaker multi-video scheduling and VPU capability.
4.Raspberry Pi Migration to Industrial Site
Needs: Raspberry Pi OS and Python ecosystem; prototype already running; lightweight visual AI; no NPU on CM5; wide temperature, fanless, DIN35 mounting.
Recommended: BL460 + Hailo-8 + X20 + Y63.
Why: Raspberry Pi CM5, Raspberry Pi OS ecosystem, M.2 Hailo-8 with 26 TOPS, 8 RS485, industrial fanless design. BL450 would require re-adapting to Debian/Ubuntu.
5.Multi-Channel HD Video / Edge Large-Model Inference
Needs: 8+ 1080P video streams or local VLM/VLA; embodied intelligence, humanoid robots, AMR vision hub; GMSL2 camera interfaces; 67 TOPS+.
Recommended: EA250Pro or EA230Pro.
Why: Jetson Orin NX 16GB / Orin Nano; 157 / 67 TOPS; 4× GMSL2; CAN FD + isolated RS485; 10–25W. BL450’s 6 TOPS is not enough for 8+ streams or large models.
6.Residential Energy Storage / OEM Deep Customization
Needs: Motherboard, not finished gateway; 2.5-inch compact size; 1 CAN FD + 2 RS485 + 2DI + 2DO; LVDS display expansion; low power.
Recommended: SBC2370.
Why: RK3562J 2.5-inch SBC, 100×72 mm, flexible I/O, Wi-Fi/BT, optional 4G/5G. A finished gateway would limit OEM design freedom.

Selection in Three Steps

  • Define the scenario: What devices? What models? How many video streams? Is offline autonomy required?
  • Match compute: Acquisition/control → 1 TOPS; YOLO → 6 TOPS+; large models or multi-HD → 67 TOPS+.
  • Confirm interfaces: How many RS485? CAN FD? GMSL2? LVDS?

Bottom line: Choose the best match, not the most expensive. ARMxy edge gateways offer 360,000 combinations for industrial AIoT edge computing.
