Jetson Orin Nano 2: A Generational Upgrade—Not a Replacement for Orin Nano
NVIDIA released the Jetson Orin Nano 2 on August 25, 2026. On paper, it is a major step up: 78 TOPS, 8GB memory, 8-core Arm CPU, same form factor, and “2× inference performance” versus Orin Nano Super. At 15W, it matches Orin Nano Super performance while cutting power by 40%.
But the real question for developers is not how fast the new chip is. It is how long the old one will remain viable.
The “2×” Claim Is About Inference, Not Peak TOPS
Orin Nano Super peaks at 67 TOPS; Orin Nano 2 reaches 78 TOPS—only about 16% higher on paper. The 2× gain comes from improved Tensor Cores and higher memory bandwidth, which matter for real workloads such as LLMs and vision-language models. For power-sensitive devices like drones and mobile robots, the 40% efficiency gain is equally important.
NVIDIA’s strategic intent is clear: bring medium-scale generative models—previously cloud-only—onto entry-level edge hardware.
Orin Nano Is Not Being Retired Soon
According to NVIDIA’s lifecycle table, Jetson Orin Nano 8GB and 4GB remain available until January 2032. Orin Nano Super shares the same hardware and lifecycle. Even with Orin Nano 2 launching in H1 2027, the Orin Nano series has at least five more years of official supply.
Why?
After Orin Nano 2 arrives, Orin Nano (including Super) will likely become a “gatekeeper” for cost-sensitive markets—still a rational choice where the latest LLMs are unnecessary.
What About NX2?
Orin NX faces more replacement pressure because Orin Nano 2’s 78 TOPS approaches NX 8GB’s lower range, and its efficiency competes in low-power NX scenarios. But no official NX2 launch information exists. NVIDIA’s 2026 focus is on Orin Nano 2 and the high-end Jetson Thor series (T3000/T2000). NX2 will likely come after Orin Nano 2 is validated—possibly with more aggressive Tensor Core and memory changes.
Selection Advice
Bottom Line
Orin Nano 2 raises the entry-level bar—but it does not invalidate the old ticket. For many industrial edge AI projects, Orin Nano Super remains a practical, cost-effective choice well into the late 2020s.
